UCF President Alexander Cartwright and Dr. Phillips Charities invite UCF Downtown students, faculty, staff and friends to The Pandemic Pivot: How to Adapt and Thrive in Challenging Times, a virtual panel discussion at 1 p.m., May 20.

 

Event attendees will have the opportunity to hear from entrepreneurs who successfully navigated their businesses during the pandemic. These leaders will share “lessons learned” and real-world solutions to pressing business concerns.

 

This is a great opportunity for you to hear directly from business leaders as they share their stories and experiences during one of history’s most unprecedented times. Panelists include:

Clarence Otis, Jr
Chief Executive Office, Darden Restaurants Inc., 2004-2014
Chairman, Darden Restaurants Inc., 2005-2014
Darden is the world’s largest full-service restaurant company, and its brands are Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse, Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen, The Capital Grille, Bahama Breeze, Seasons 52, Eddie V's and Yard House.

Under Mr. Otis’s leadership, Darden’s strategy combined active portfolio management, disciplined brand building, rigorous operational execution and the creation and sustaining of a motivating and inclusive culture. In addition to achieving strong operating and financial results during Mr. Otis’s tenure as CEO, in 2011 Darden became the first full-service restaurant company to be named one of Fortune magazine’s 100 Best Places to Work, a distinction it achieved for four consecutive years.

Mr. Otis joined Darden in 1995 as treasurer, before becoming chief financial officer and then president of its Smokey Bones brand. Prior to Darden, he led the municipal securities group of Chemical Securities (a predecessor of JP Morgan Securities). A member of the New York Bar Association, Mr. Otis began his professional career as a securities attorney in New York City, practicing for four years before entering the financial services industry.

Mr. Otis serves on the board of directors of VF Corporation; Verizon Communications, Inc., where he is currently the independent lead director; the Travelers Companies; Union Square Hospitality Group; and Jazz at Lincoln Center, where he is chairman. He is also a member of the National Board of Governors of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and is on the board of trustees of Cleveland Clinic.
Mr. Otis has a JD from Stanford Law School and a bachelor's degree from Williams College, where he graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa and where he has been recognized with an honorary degree. In 2007, Mr. Otis was inducted as a lifetime member of the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans.

Mr. Otis, who grew up in Los Angeles, is married to Jacqueline Bradley. They have three children, Calvin, Randall and Allison.

Sara Bernard '00, Partner, Holland & Knight, LLP
Sara Bernard is a partner at Holland & Knight LLP, an international law firm with more than 1,400 lawyers and other professionals in 28 offices throughout the world. She counsels clients on a wide range of commercial real estate matters. Bernard is sought out by developers in master-planned, mixed-use communities that include a wide range of asset classifications such as office buildings, shopping centers, hotels, hospitals, residential communities, industrial parks, medical and technology clusters, sports and entertainment clusters, and other investment-grade properties in single asset and multistate, multi-property portfolio transactions. She was named one of the Orlando Business Journal’s “Women Who Mean Business” honorees in 2021. The Best Lawyers in America guide again recognized Bernard in Real Estate Law in 2021. She currently serves as Secretary on the UCF Foundation Board of Directors and is a former chair of the UCF Alumni Board of Directors

John Rivers Founder & CEO, 4Roots and 4R Restaurant Group
Following a 20-year career in healthcare, John Rivers retired as President of a $1.5 billion company to pursue a lifelong dream of opening a restaurant. In 2009, Rivers created his first concept, 4 Rivers Smokehouse, which quickly became one of the fastest growing restaurants in the Southeast. The business grew to 22 locations to include John’s other concepts, the Southern-inspired COOP, the Mexican themed Cantina at Disney Springs, and the farm-to-table 4Roots Café. 4 Rivers garnered national recognition being named “The South’s Best BBQ” by Southern Living, and the “#1 BBQ Restaurant Chain” by MSN. Born out of Rivers's garage, the “barbeque ministry” remains at the heart of the company’s mission to lift up those in need and help build better communities. The culmination of the 4R Foundation’s work, the Orlando based 4Roots Farm will serve as a community campus to inspire revolutionary change in Florida’s food system through education on sustainable and regenerative farming, advancements in agriculture technology, and research in culinary medicine via the launch of the Culinary Health Institute. Author of The Southern Cowboy Cookbook and graduate of Florida State University College of Business, where he served on the Board of Governors, Rivers has been named one of the Restaurant Industry’s Power 20 Leaders by Restaurant Business & News, Restauranter of the Year by Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association and Orlando Magazine’s “50 Most Powerful, 15 to Watch”. He had the honor of cooking at the prestigious James Beard House in New York City, and was twice named a finalist for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Rivers serves on the FDACS Food Security Advisory Council and the Department of Agriculture Innovation Committee for the State of Florida and is a member of the Florida Governor’s Council of 100. He lives in Winter Park with his wife and two children, and serves on the boards of numerous school, church, and local charitable organizations.

Ken Robinson, President and CEO, Dr. Phillips Charities
Ken Robinson serves as President and CEO of Dr. Phillips Charities, which is made up of Dr. Phillips, Inc. and The Dr. P. Phillips Foundation. In his role, he oversees the Dr. Phillips real estate operations, an extensive disciplined investment portfolio and one of Central Florida’s largest grant-making organizations. In 2020, Dr. Phillips Charities reached a milestone, having awarded more than $200 million since its inceptionRobinson's primary goal at Dr. Phillips is to uphold the values, legacy and donor intent of the Phillips Family. He is committed to his Central Florida roots through his support and involvement in many non-profit organizations. Ken formerly served as director and executive committee member for the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts as well as co-chair of the Dr. Phillips Center Phase II Construction Committee, and was selected to serve on the UCF Presidential Search Committee.

Patrick Crowley, Associate Vice President for Advancement, Communications and Marketing, UCF
With more than 30 years of successful communication experience, Crowley came to UCF in June 2018 and is responsible for Advancement Communications, Donor Relations and Stewardship and Foundation Events. Prior to coming to UCF, Crowley spent 10 years at Florida State University, where he helped launch and successfully close FSU’s $1 billion comprehensive campaign.
